The middle lane

You’re not drinking every day. You’re not rock bottom.

But the week keeps running the same shape.

Repeat · and the promises to “moderate” never stick

If that’s you, you’re not broken. You’re just stuck in a pattern. This club gives you a better one.

What this is

Not a lecture. Not a one-off motivation hit.

It’s weekly structure, with people who get it. Running helps sobriety because it:

The change wasn’t the point. It was the side effect.

I wasn’t an alcoholic. I was a middle-lane drinker.

Two or three beers through the week. A full binge Friday or Saturday.

Monday I’d feel it: lethargic, foggy, promising to moderate. I got fitter, but the drinking still pulled me back.

So I made a deal with myself: 90 days sober. After that, I could go back if I wanted.

I never looked back. Ninety days in: calmer, more energy, body changing. And my running went to another level.

This year I’ve run three marathons, including one for Prostate Cancer UK. In October I’m running a 50km ultra.

Running became my tool for sobriety. If it helped me get out of the middle lane, I know it can help you too.

Questions

The things people ask first.

Do I have to be fit?
No. Many members start with walk-run. We build gradually, and nobody gets left behind.
Do I have to be sober already?
No. But the club is sobriety-focused. You need a genuine intention to change.
What if I slip up?
No shame. You check in, reset, and keep going. That’s the whole point of a weekly rhythm.
Is it always Leamington Spa?
Leamington Spa is our home parkrun — that’s the one to turn up to if you’ve heard nothing else. Now and then we travel to Rugby or Daventry parkrun for a change of scenery. When we do, it goes in the WhatsApp group by Thursday, so you’ll never arrive at an empty start line.
Is this officially affiliated with parkrun?
No. We meet there as a community. parkrun is free and open to everyone.
What happens after the run?
We regroup for ten minutes, then optional coffee nearby for anyone who wants it.

You don’t need rock bottom. You need a better Saturday.
